Redd Residence

  • BERWYN, PA

HBA professionals added a Cedar Tapersawn roof to the magnificent colonial in Berwyn.

Background: The cedar roof, deep overhangs, rounded gutters, operating wooden shutters and distinguished stone work with deep, raked joints bring a touch of class to this stately stone farmhouse in Berwyn. Hancock Building’s task was to modernize the exterior of the home without losing the superior colonial charm.

The Project: Cedar Tapersawns, 3/4" thick and 18" wide, were used to beautify the exterior of this classic colonial in Berwyn. New six-inch half-round aluminum gutters were installed and leaf-guard gutter protection keeps the gutters maintenance free. Snow guards were added to the roof.

Four dilapidated stucco chimneys were knocked down and rebuilt from the roofline up adding classic charm to the peak of the home. The chimneys were flashed with copper and rebuild with a refined brick design.

Carolina Beaded Vinyl siding was installed on the one-story kitchen addition in the rear of the house features a rustic wood grain patterned from classic handcrafted boards. One of the most advanced siding materials produced today, it provides the warmth of real wood, without the high maintenance or cost.

HBA pros also rehung and repaired the gutters on the Redd barn.

Project Challenge: One challenge was that the entire roof lacked ventilation. HBA professionals added ten soffit vents spaced every three feet under the eaves of both sides of the house. Working in conjunction with the new roof ridge vent to create negative air pressure, this process helps the house breath and create an ambient temperature between the house and the roof. The original structure didn’t utilize this ventilation process.
